چکیده

Relativistic heavy ion beams are an intense source of (quasireal) photons with a spectrum extending up to several hundred GeV, due to the high charge Z and the large energy of the ions. In this note we discuss the possibility of using this in peripheral collisions for photon-photon physics. We discuss the total luminosities that can be achieved with diierent ion species. In order to suppress central collisions an eecient trigger for peripheral collisions is needed, that is, for the two ions to remain intact during the collision. We discuss the physical potential of these collisions especially for the search for new physics up to invariant masses of about 100 GeV and the hadron spectroscopy. Some aspect of this were discussed in detail in connection with the Letter of Intent for FELIX (CERN/LHCC 97-45, LHCC/I10) and we refer the reader to it for more details.

Feasibility of the Hardware Muon Trigger Track Finder Processor in CMS

This paper describes a feasibility study for the design of the muon trigger track finder processor in the high-energy physics experiment compact muon solenoid (CMS), planned for 2005, at CERN. It covers the specification, proposed method, and a prototype implementation. Comparison between several other measurement methods and the proposed one are carried out. The task of the processor is to ide...

Study of the Optimum Momentum Resolution in the CMS Muon System

This project deals with the development of equations from simulation data to assign momentum to muons moving through the endcap region of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at The European Center for Nuclear Research. The layout of the CMS experiment, the endcap detector operation, and the details of developing momentum-assignment equations are described. A ...

Heavy Ion Physics with CMS at LHC

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) plans to operate as a heavy ion collider for one month each year starting in 2007. LHC will be capable of accelerating a variety of ions up to beam energies of 7 TeV/charge. The design, peak and three-hour-fill-averaged luminosities are presented in Table 1 along with the maximum center of mass energy[1]. The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) [2] experiment is a genera...

Some properties of a 90% C2H2F4 gas mixture, used to operate resistive plate chambers in avalanche mode, are determined by comparing the experimental results with the prediction of simple analytical calculations. The fast charge distribution of the signal induced on pick-up electrodes is reproduced by means of a Monte Carlo simulation of the avalanche development. In addition predictions for a ...
